The Drug Treatment Act of 2000 permitted doctors who meet certain training qualifications to prescribe buprenorphine in the treatment of heroin addiction and other opioid addictions. Buprenorphine physicians became able to assist opioid addicted patients in anoffice setting bypassing the restrictions that typically apply to patients receiving methadone. This treatment method maximized patient convenience and accessibility thus increasing the number of people who could access medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction.
